My experience with Lucid Poker Trainer

The Upswing Team asked me to review their new tool, Lucy GTO. Even though I am an affiliate partner of Upswing, this review will be honest and show the advantages and disadvantages of this new tool.

I aim to help you find the best poker tools, courses, and training sites. I want to build trust with my reviews and want the creators of these tools or courses to receive constructive feedback to make even better poker products.

For this review, I planned to do a few drills for each section, answer some quizzes, find pros and cons, and give you my feedback.

But I got hooked on this tool. It wasn’t the case when I first used it about a year ago when it was bulky and didn’t work smoothly. However now, it works better, and if the GTO strategy works, then Lucid can add massive value to my game.

What is Lucy’s GTO?

In simple terms, Lucid Poker is a solver (a computer program) where you play hands against virtual opponents and receive instant feedback on your decisions.

Lucy Trainer tells you if your decision was correct from a GTO perspective, helping you learn how to play GTO-based poker strategies in cash games and tournaments.

Installation

The installation itself took less than 2 minutes.

This is the second time I’ve installed it. The first time I installed it was on my old laptop about a year ago, and it took much longer. So there has been a clear improvement.

After the app is installed, on the main dashboard, you can either go straight to practicing the drills or select the second icon, ‘Cardle,’ to learn more about why Lucid Trainer makes its decisions.

What is Cardle?

The Cardle section, which consists of daily quizzes, is a valuable resource for understanding Lucid GTO’s decisions. These quizzes, covering different aspects of poker strategy, provide a solid foundation for using the tool effectively.

Each quiz covers a different part of poker strategy (for example, barreling in position against a big blind or defending against a flop check-raise BTN vs. BB).

You get one quiz per day, but selecting a quiz from a different day is confusing. You need to click on the calendar on the right-hand side. Each date has a quiz assigned to it (see the screenshot below):

If you haven’t used solvers before or have little solver experience, I advise you to start with the Cardle Quizzes before moving to the drill sections.

The Main Daschboard of Lucid Trainer

After you choose the type of poker game you want to practice, you get three options:

  • Play Custom Drill
  • Play Leaderboard
  • Open in Sim Browser

Tournaments are my favorite type of poker, so I started my Lucy journey with them.

Playing Custom Tournament Drills

I advise you to start with a custom drill to familiarize yourself with the tool before you try to compete on the leaderboard.

To create a custom drill, select your stack, street, position, hands range, and when the hand should end. You can also filter the kind of flops you would like to play.

Playing hands in custom drill

when playing the drills, you will see in the top right corner the:

  • Number of hands you played,
  • The Average EV difference (the closer to zero, the better your game is). If you select the action that is favorite by the Lucid Trainer, you will get an EV Difference equal to zero because if the solver uses this strategy, there will be no EV difference.
  • The score is only relevant for the Leaderboard games (it doesn’t change in the custom drills).

Lucid poker trainer custom drill screen explained

At the bottom of the screen, you can see your last action and the best decision according to the solver (shown in percentage).

There is also the EV Difference in Big Blinds (the closer to zero, the better), and the RNG Accuracy (Random Number Generator) determines the aggressiveness of actions.

The higher the score, the more aggressive the actions. You can change it during play by clicking or adjusting the settings.

While you play hands, Lucid gives you instant feedback based on your decision.

If you make a big mistake, an “EV Error” window shows how much EV in Big Blinds this move costs you. For example, the screenshot below shows that my mistake with KJo would cost me 3.38 Big Blinds.

With more minor mistakes, you continue playing (there is no EV Error pop-up). There is no time limit to make a decision in the custom drill, unlike in the leaderboard drills, where you will have limited time to make decisions.

Drill replayer

You can click on the top left corner to review your game with the drill replayer at any stage. Here, you can view the ranges that you should be playing in a given scenario and ranges that should be folded (from a GTO perspective).

Playing Leaderboards – Lucid Cash Trainer

To test the Leaderboards drill, I used the cash games.  In the leaderboard games, you are put straight into the action.  The setup looks the same as in the custom drills. The main difference is that the Lucid trainer chooses your hands, position, and stack size. Again, like in the custom drills, when you make a big mistake, an EV error window pops up and tells which action was best to take from an EV perspective.

This allows you to think quickly and adjust to the fast-changing environment. There is also a time bank, but if you get timed out, it doesn’t affect your score.

Sim Browser – Cash

I have tested the Sim Browser part of the Lucid tool in the cash game section.

The Sim Browser allows you to set up specific game scenarios (hands) you want to study.

You select the hand ranges, actions (check, raise, call fold) for each player/position, and the streets. Based on your input, the program will tell you the best GTO play.

You can create a drill based on the information you provided in the bottom right corner. As you can see, its functionality is very similar to the custom drill I described before.

Spin and Go

Regarding the dashboard, filters, and drill replayer, the Spin and Go look the same as the tournament and cash game drills. Here, you can play spin and gos hands with stacks ranging from 1bb to 25bb.

Final Feedback and Recommendation

I first used the tool about a year ago, and it was slow and bulky back then. But now, I see a significant improvement. It works smoothly, doesn’t break, and is much simpler to use than before.

There are many more poker game options now, and more will be added with future updates.

Once I understood how Lucid works and started doing the drills, I got hooked, just like I did with poker when I first played it.

The parts I like most are the leaderboard games and quizzes. No surprise these features are the most used by users.

$49 per month is a good value, especially since it is constantly updated and improved, and new game formats will be added soon. Another plus is that there is now a mobile app, though I haven’t tested it yet.

On the negative side, I have one problem with solvers: they are robots, and they don’t consider important aspects of poker, like player tendencies, psychology, table dynamics, and so on.

The price of LUCID GTO may increase because it is a new tool, and new features (like the mobile app) will be added.

FAQ

What is a Lucid Poker Trainer?

Lucid GTO is a solver (a poker program that simplifies learning advanced GTO-based poker strategies). It’s packed with ready-to-use strategies called ‘Cloud Sims,’ so you don’t need to mess around with complex solvers yourself.

Lucid GTO is a result of a partnership between Lucid GTO and UpswingPoker.

How does it work?

With input from top poker players and coaches, the Upswing Poker team prepared a set of GTO-based rules for starting hands and after the flop game. These rules were then used to run simulations, forming the ‘Cloud Sims’ (ready-to-use strategies).

The simulations were run comprehensively to ensure the strategies were as effective as possible, aspiring for a high level of accuracy (they call this a low convergence index).

For the starting hand (pre-flop) decisions, they used a tool called Hold ’em Resources Calculator.

For decisions after the flop (post-flop), they used PioSOLVER, another advanced tool.

How much is it?

It is possible that in the future the price of LUCID GTO will increase because it is a new tool and there will be new features added.

What is the RNG nunber?

The RNG stands for Random Number Generator, representing the aggressiveness of the actions. The higher the score, the more aggressive the actions. You can change it by clicking on it while playing or setting it up in the settings.

Can you set up a custom Hand you played and get GTO feedback from Lucid?

Many times in poker, I play a hand and wonder if my action was correct. Lucid Trainer allows me to check if I play my hand accurately from the GTO perspective.

You can set up a custom hand either from the custom setup of the drill or in the Sim Browser.  Choose your opponents’ exact streets, stacks, and actions and click start drill.

The screenshot below shows you how to do it in the ‘Play Custom Drill’ section. You can do it for any game (Tournaments, SNG, Cash, etc.)

custom set up in lucid

What are the ‘Drills’?

When using this kind of software for the first time, I wasn’t entirely sure what ‘drills’ were, but these are the hands you play to practice and improve your skills. The ‘drills’ or hands help you test your decisions against optimal strategies to see where you stand and how to improve. Is it working on a mobile device?
Yes, there is a mobile app available.

How much is it?

It is $49. It is possible that in the future, the price of LUCID GTO will increase because it is a new tool and there will be new features added.
